DORMA receives “red dot” award for outstanding design

Competition attracts 2,068 entries from a total of 41 countries

The revolutionary DORMA MOVEO partition concept and the DORMA PHA 2500 panic hardware were both recipients of one of the world’s most coveted design awards: the “red dot”. This quality mark and prestigious seal of approval for incisive, innovative product development is granted every year within the framework of the international “red dot design award” competition.

DORMA MOVEO
DORMA MOVEO has heralded a new age in the planning, installation and application of movable walls. Techniques developed in aircraft engineering involving the use of stable, light materials have been utilised in the development of this truly advanced generation of operable partitions. With speed, lightness and flexibility all available in one and the same solution, the MOVEO concept satisfies the demands of architects, fabricators and operators involved in modern project buildings like no other movable wall system.

DORMA PHA 2500 panic hardware
With its PHA 2500 panic hardware (crossbar emergency exit device with integrated panic lock), DORMA is able to offer a compelling solution in terms of design and functional efficiency for single and double narrow-stile doors. The PHA 2500 excels both in terms of its harmonious styling and its impressive technical features – no visible fixings, satisfaction of the “low projection” requirement according to EN 1125 (projection of the crossbar fitting <100 mm from the door face), and an electronic cylinder combined with a mechanical knob.

Success in an internationally renowned design competition such as the “red dot” is an important indicator of innovative prowess. The red dot is widely recognised throughout the world as having a significant, positive influence on the image and profile of its winners. “Many of the companies that participate in the red dot design award have long recognised the importance of innovation and design as a means of differentiating their activities from those of their competitors – and of communicating their brand values,” explains Professor Dr. Peter Zec, initiator of the red dot design award and President of the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (Icsid). “Creativity alone is not sufficient; the products also have to exhibit a high level of intrinsic quality with the styling serving to communicate this quality.”

The jury of experts judging the competition expressed satisfaction at the overall quality and design excellence of the products submitted. Nowadays entries come from all over the world and from virtually every conceivable sector. As the competition has expanded in international scope and popularity, winning a red dot award has become increasingly difficult. By the same token, however, the prestige of such an award as an objectively assigned quality mark has also been enhanced.
An analysis of the statistics surrounding the 2006 “red dot award: product design” category confirms the increasing importance being attached to high-quality design. Having attracted 1,857 entries in 2005, this year the competition boasted a record 2,068 submissions from a total of 41 countries.

Award ceremony and exhibition of the winning entries
The award ceremony is to take place on 26 June 2006 in the Aalto Theatre in Essen, Germany. The winning entries will also be on show in a special exhibition entitled “Design on stage – winners of the red dot award: product design 2006” from 27 June to 23 July 2006 in Essen’s “red dot design museum”. This is located in Essen’s former Zollverein colliery, now officially designated a world cultural heritage site. The red dot design museum houses the world’s largest standing exhibition of contemporary design.

The red dot design awards
With over 5,000 entries in the three categories: “red dot award: product design”, “red dot award: communication design”, and “red dot award: design concept”, the red dot competition is a premier design showcase of global standing. Every year since 1995, the “Design-Zentrum” in Essen has singled out examples of outstanding design for red dot honours, with the winners being officially honoured in the associated exhibition.
