Vienna’s new trade fair complex—more than a clever concept

With the eastward expansion of the European Union, Austria’s capital is finding itself increasingly at the centre of the economic map. Although construction of its new trade show and exhibition complex - at a cost of 192 million euros - has not turned Vienna into one of the truly big fair cities, it has made it one of the most modern and beautiful. And the fact that the complex has remained at its Prater Park address, rather than being banished to the outer reaches of the city, has to be regarded as a particularly shrewd decision. Architectural partnership Atelier Peichl und Partner were the creators of this supreme howcase, aligning their generously appointed design to the human soul - no hermetically sealed facility this, with instead plenty of openings into its urban surroundings.

The exposed structural elements provide the central focal point of the light-flooded steel-and-glass construction in white, silver and blue. To the west the visitor is welcomed by an elegant, amply glazed main foyer of triangular plan that can also be used as an exhibition venue in its own right. A 450-metre-long glass mall extends from here along the east-west axis to the second main foyer, dividing the complex into its functional zones. The four exhibition halls adjoin at the south, while to the north is the Congress Centre and the round office block to which the conference facility is joined at ground floor level. From the roof of the cylindrical office
building, the metal structure of the exhibition centre tower rises 96 metres into the air. The intricate latticework with its pinnacle - red-lit at night - towers more than 30 metres above the magnificent ferris wheel on the Prater Park fairground. This slight irreverence for tradition is hardly surprising given the second profession of the architect, Gustav Peichl, whose satirical caricatures appear under his nom de plume "Ironimus" in such publications as the Süddeutsche Zeitung. Less frivolous but just as seriously conceived is the spatial concept for meetings and trade shows that are held in the shadow of the tower.

The Congress Centre - capable of holding 3,800 conference participants - offers column-free space with spans of up to 32 metres to afford maximum layout flexibility. Separate rooms can be created for events designed for anything between 125 and 1,500 guests. And it was the Variflex range from DORMA Hüppe that provided the perfect solution for providing those on-demand arrangements. A total of 356 sound insulating Variflex Semi-Automatic modules with high-grade panel finishes in light ash were precisely matched to the interior of the conference centre to create rooms of appropriate ambience. The DORMA portfolio also offered a range of door control and architectural hardware solutions, meeting in full all the functional and design requirements of the project. In the exhibition area, designed for 21,000 visitors, the internal and external doors are equipped with series TS 93 heavy-duty door closers. And as in the case of the Congress Centre, Peichl und Partner opted for DORMA Hüppe to provide the partitioning systems. Alternative room layouts can thus be created in three halls using a total of 510 Variflex Solid operable dividing wall elements. Fourteen telescopic elements and 43 double pass doors provide the necessary ingress and egress access points. The contrast provided by the white surfaces of the wall modules against the shining cast asphalt floors and the exposed ceiling trusswork is particularly striking, although the atmospheric enhancement that this provides could remain hidden in all the hurly-burly of a trade show.
